Mastering the Art of Cross-Selling
As an independent insurance agent, it’s important to create a sales process that’s both effective and efficient. Sales, after all, are the lifeblood of your business, what your income and your growth trajectory depend on.
There are many ways to increase sales, and many strategies that you can follow to do so. One of the tried-and-true, age-old concepts is cross-selling, which involves selling multiple products to the same customer.
While cross-selling can be extremely effective, it can also be a little tricky. Below are some ways that you can learn how to master the art of cross-selling.
Know Your Customers
Getting to know your customers well is perhaps the most important aspect of cross-selling. If you don’t know your customers well, it’s hard to understand what their needs are today, and help them anticipate what their needs in the future might be.
By getting to know your customers, you’ll be better equipped to suggest certain insurance products they could need.
For example, if you know that a couple who is buying auto insurance from you just got married, you might also inquire about their living arrangements. Knowing this information could help you suggest homeowners insurance (if they bought a home) or renters insurance (if they’re living in an apartment).
The more information you know about your customers, the better prepared you can be to serve them best.
Push Bundling Benefits
With insurance, one of the most common reasons why people buy more than one product from the same agent is that they receive a significant discount for doing so. Turn on the TV, and you’ll be hard-pressed to get through an entire program without seeing a commercial for an insurance company promoting bundled discounts.
There’s a reason for this: The marketing tactic works.
If customers are able to save as much as 30% to 40% on their typical insurance premiums by buying more than one product from you, why wouldn’t they do it? This is especially true for insurance most people have to buy, such as auto and homeowners.
As an insurance agent, promoting these discounts to customers is a great way to sell additional products.
But, it’s also a good idea to push some of the other benefits of bundling services. This includes consolidating bills and only having to deal with one insurance agent should they ever need to file a claim.
Collect Information
As an independent insurance agent, you should always be collecting data on current and prospective customers. This information should then be input into a modern software system, such as a CRM, so that you can sort through the data to gain insights.
This data in the CRM will help you identify cross-sell opportunities and time your sales pitch perfectly. For instance, you can use your CRM software to filter the data by any number of categories or inputs. This could include age, marital status, household status, household income and more.
There’s no end to the possibilities that exist in analyzing the data that’s in your CRM system. But, in order to analyze the data, you must first collect the information.
This can be done by purchasing lead lists, by setting up email forms on your website and social media pages, through intake forms for new customers and more.
Create Cross-Selling Strategies
Cross-selling shouldn’t just be something you do on the side. It’s should be an integral part of your sales process.
As such, it’s important to create specific cross-selling strategies for you and any other agents at your company. Every agent should be tasked with identifying cross-sell opportunities through the CRM system, as described above.
The strategies that you create should also include a way that you can track key metrics so that you can see what works and what doesn’t. From there, you can improve your cross-selling strategies to be more effective.
Be Proactive
What all of the above suggests, in sum, is that if you want to be successful cross-selling, you need to be proactive. You can’t sit back and wait for current and prospective customers to come to you and tell you they’d like to buy more than one insurance product.
You have to be the one who suggests it to them, presenting each and every one of your customers with the insurance products you believe would fit them best and pitching the immense benefits to them of doing so.
Following these steps will see you well on your way to mastering the art of cross-selling as an independent insurance agent.
