How to Develop Your Brand as an Insurance Agent

With so much competition in the insurance industry today, it’s crucial to develop a solid brand as an independent insurance agent. After all, you’re competing for clients with not only other local agents but also with self-service insurance plans that customers can obtain on their own through the internet.

If you want to build a successful insurance business, you need to figure out how to stand out. Below are some simple ways that you can start to develop your brand as an insurance agent.

Define What Sets You Apart

So, what is that one thing that sets you apart from your competition? This is what’s known as your unique value proposition.

Clearly defining this is the first step in developing your brand as an insurance agent. That’s because everything that you do from a marketing and operational standpoint will revolve around this unique value proposition.

Do you bring certain expertise in life insurance policies? Can you offer multiple types of insurance policies that allow customers to save money? Do you have certain values that align with those of your target customers?

Once you figure out what your unique value proposition is, write it down by crafting a compelling vision statement and mission statement that you’ll adhere to in everything you do.

Define Your Target Audience

Before you can actually develop your brand, you’ll need to know who your target audience is. This can be defined once you have defined your unique value proposition.

If, for instance, you specialize in life insurance and Medicare, then your target audience might be an older population. If you are located in a city and focus more on renter’s insurance, then a younger demographic might be your target.

Defining your target audience, and putting different audiences into “buckets,” will help outline what your brand-building strategy will be.

Share Content That is Valuable

A big part of standing out among the crowd is establishing trust among customers, and one of the best ways to do so today is to share content that customers find valuable.

This could be thought-provoking blogs about what things people should consider as they’re searching for homeowners insurance, what to consider when buying a new car or how life insurance can be a central part of estate planning.

This can also be shorter video snippets or small messages that you share regarding interesting statistics about insurance. It can also be success stories that you share about some of your other clients.

By sharing this content on a regular basis on your personal website and social media channels, you’ll be engendering yourself to your target audience, as they look to you as an expert in your field.

Become Visible in the Community

Some of the most successful independent insurance agents establish themselves as integral parts of the community. It’s important for you to become visible in your local community, as people tend to want to do business with people they recognize and that give back to a greater cause.

You can do this in a number of different ways. It could be joining local clubs and professional organizations, setting up a booth at local fairs and vendor events, volunteering at community clean-up days and sponsoring local youth sports teams.

There are many examples of how you can get involved and become visible in your community. Doing so will help people recognize you and either come to you when they have insurance needs or refer you to someone else they know who has those needs.

Network for Business, Partnerships and Referrals

Professional networking is a big part of developing your brand as an insurance agent. You can do this by joining local general business associations, industry-specific networking groups and much more.

Attending the events held by these various organizations will allow you to not only meet new people in your community but also understand the “lay of the land,” so to speak.

While you might not get direct business from these events, you can definitely establish strong personal and professional bonds that will boost your business. This includes gaining referrals for new clients and establishing business partnerships that can set you up for success and make you more visible.

Be Visible Online

You can’t ignore your online presence today. Luckily, it’s easier than ever to build an online presence.

Through your insurance website, social media sites and any other platforms, you can introduce yourself to prospective clients, market your services, share your insights and help establish and develop your brand as an insurance agent.

Many of these services are completely free to use, or can be created for a minimal cost. All of this will help you establish yourself as an insurance authority who people can trust, which will lead to more clients.
