5 Tips for Insurance Agents to Find a Work-Life Balance

Finding a good work-life balance is becoming harder and harder in today’s fast-paced world. It’s especially challenging for small business owners such as independent insurance agents, whose livelihood is dependent on how well they perform on a daily basis.

At the same time, achieving this balance has become even more important today, as numerous studies have proven how essential it is to be physically, emotionally and mentally fit if you want to live a happy, healthy life.

Below are five tips for how insurance agents can find a work-life balance.

  1. Delegate

One of the most challenging things for small business owners is learning how to delegate. At one point, as you were starting your business, you likely did everything on your own.

As you grow, you might want to hold onto as much as you possibly can, but that’s simply not sustainable. Not only can doing so lead to significant burnout, but it can also hurt your business, too.

It’s important to learn the art of delegation. Some routine tasks can easily be delegated to others around your office. If you don’t have any employees yet, you might even consider outsourcing some tasks, such as accounting or bookkeeping.

This will free you up to handle more important tasks at the company, and also give you more time to spend outside the office as you wish.

  1. Leverage Technology

Leveraging technology is easier than ever today. There are many powerful tools on the market, and a large portion of them are completely free to use.

By choosing the right technological tools, you can reduce how much time you spend on low-level tasks so you can focus more of your time on building your business and spending quality time with those you love.

There are various software programs that are designed specifically for independent insurance agents that can make your life at work a lot easier. There are also many apps that handle team communication, project management and so much more that you can take advantage of.

These programs also allow you to access your information and vital data from anywhere, which makes you more effective and less reliant on sitting in an office all day.

  1. Be Realistic

Many of us feel stressed out at work because we simply set unrealistic goals for ourselves, or don’t set up appropriate boundaries. This is obviously a huge downfall, and one of the biggest contributing factors to a work-life imbalance.

It’s important to take a step back and assess your situation fully. Then, set goals that are realistic and achievable — both for work and for life outside of work. When the goals are easier to achieve, you’re more likely to accomplish them and feel accomplished in the process.

  1. Commit to the Balance

Small business owners set many goals for how they want to grow their company. Independent insurance agents may have plans on how they want to expand their clients, offer new products or learn more about different insurance plans.

If you want to achieve a healthy work-life balance, you need to commit to it. In this way, it might be a good idea to set goals for what this balance looks like for you.

Maybe it’s exercising three times a week, making sure that you’re home for dinner on time every night of the week, taking time out to go on a special outing with your family — or whatever else you can think of.

By creating actual work-life balance goals, it’ll be easier for you to plan them into your schedule and achieve that balance.

  1. Stay Healthy

So much attention of the work-life balance is paid to the two major parts of people’s lives — what they do at work and what they do with their family at home. But, an equal amount of attention should be paid to yourself.

You need to give yourself significant attention, too, so that you can always be your best self. This means eating right, taking breaks, resting, doing things that you enjoy, exercising and sleeping well.

As mentioned before, you will become your best self when you’re physically, mentally and emotionally fit. This will make you a better all-around person, and will result in you being your best at home and at work.
